Symptoms of Achilles Tendinitis

The Achilles is a foot tendon which connects the two largest calf muscles to the back of the heel bone. When this tendon becomes inflamed it causes Achilles Tendinitis.

There are a number of symptoms that may indicate you have Achilles Tendonitis. Most people who suffer from the condition typically experience pain and stiffness at the back of the ankle, redness, and warmth around the affected area, limited range of motion in the foot and lumpy scar tissue that can be felt on the tendon.

What Causes Achilles Tendinitis?

This is where we can really help our patients to understand the importance of paying attention to the way they go about their routine physical activities. Certain routine behaviors have a high likelihood of leading to Achilles Tendonitis. These behaviors include neglecting to warm up before exercise, overstraining your muscles during exercise, routinely wearing high heels for prolonged periods and wearing shoes that aren’t the proper fit. Additionally, highly runners are also prone to Achilles Tendinitis because of the muscle strain involved in repetitive body movements.

How We Diagnose Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles Tendinitis can be clinically diagnosed at an office visit to your chiropractor. The visit typically consists of a hands-on examination, where the chiropractor will feel for tender spots on the heel or ankle. In some cases, the chiropractor may have you get an x-ray or an MRI, but this is usually not necessary.

Treatment for Achilles Tendinitis in Fort Lauderdale

This is one case where a simple chiropractic adjustment would not be our go-to method of choice for relieving pain. An inflamed Achilles tendon causes acute muscle tenderness so a gentle touch is especially necessary with this injury. Gentle, non-invasive treatments that we generally use to relieve the pain of Achilles Tendinitis include applying an ice pack or a compression brace to the affected area, as well as using a special elevated shoe to prevent heel movement. We also have patients perform a series of gentle heel stretches that, over time, helps to strengthen the calf muscle.
