Spinal Adjustment Begins with Proper Diagnostics

Whether there is a need to diagnose muscle spasm, misalignment or to determine the best treatment option, each case must begin with proper diagnostics. At Tartack Chiropractic & Wellness Center we offer surface EMG, which is more commonly known as Myovision Scan.

The Myovision Scan is both a static and dynamic test that helps us see exactly where muscles are most active. The results show a clear picture of abnormal muscle action and those results help us to understand the current relationship between the muscles, bones, and connective tissue. While the results are comprehensive, the test itself is easy and pain-free.

How a Surface EMG Works

As your Ft. Lauderdale chiropractor, we believe in comprehensive tools for diagnostics and treatment. First, the scanner itself is a handheld device. Its purpose is to record and measure the electrical impulses within the muscles. The total time for the scan is less than two minutes and usually ranges from 60-90 seconds. This is a non-invasive procedure that is safe to use on everyone and completely free of discomfort. The process is very much like having an EKG test.

A set of electrodes is applied to the muscle group. The electrodes measure the amount of electrical activity in each muscle group. When muscles contract they do so when an impulse of electricity signals it is time to contract. That energy comes from the central nervous system in a process that we call neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

When a muscle is overworked such as during a muscle spasm the results show up via the EMG. The Components of the EMG include a scanner, electrodes and a screen for displaying the results. If muscles are not contracting when they need to either due to nerve damage another injury the results also show on the EMG. The results help us determine if spinal manipulation is needed or is more passive treatment is best.

Does the EMG show Misalignment?

Not specifically, no. What the scan shows is muscle activity and those results help us determine whether or not additional tests are needed and which types of tests would best benefit each patient. Spinal care is not something that is a blanket treatment. Each case must be evaluated individually and a treatment plan developed for each patient. Injuries to muscles or misalignment of vertebrae or joints require individual diagnostics and treatment.

So while the EMG does not show specific injuries it does show us where problems occur and what the extent of those problems are. From there we may focus chiropractic treatment such as spinal manipulation or we may order additional tests such as an x-ray.
