Manipulation Under Anesthesia

All About Manipulation Under Anesthesia

Manipulation under anesthesia is a multidisciplinary manual therapy treatment while a patient is under sedation. Mobilization techniques and myofascial manipulation are implemented to improve soft tissue movement and articular movement. It can also be done for other orthopedic musculoskeletal problems. It works well when a patient would be uncomfortable during an adjustment due to a painful injury or spinal condition. Manipulation under anesthesia affords many benefits, including:

  • The breaking of scar tissue in and around the spinal joints

  • The stretching of shortened tendons, ligaments and muscles

  • Relief from pain cause by damaged discs

  • Decrease in chronic muscle spasm

  • Immediate relief with continued progressive results

While the patient is under anesthesia, a chiropractor may perform spinal mobilization without impulse, low velocity techniques to treat both periarticular and articular tissues. Mobilization with impulse, high velocity techniques may also be implemented to reduce joint restrictions, decrease hypertonicity and increase the joint’s range of motion.

Prior to manipulation under anesthesia, the screening process entails diagnostic testing, medical history, and physical exam. When indicated, chest X-rays, EKGs, MRIs and CBC blood workup may be required. Often, a musculoskeletal diagnostic ultrasound is performed to identify scar tissues around muscles, nerve roots, ligaments and joints. Blood test help the medical staff assess patient health before going under anesthesia. Patients with neck or back pain who have responded poorly to conventional care like physical therapy and epidural injections are often good candidates for manipulation under anesthesia. That because those modalities do not address fibrous adhesions. Patient might feel better temporarily, but pain often returns.
